New opportunities for photovoltaics in Poland

The current energy mix in Poland is still dominated by coal and its derivatives (almost 70%), despite the decline in production and consumption. However, the share of renewable energy sources (RES) is increasing, mainly thanks to onshore wind power and photovoltaics: up to 18% by the end of 2020. Natural gas is the other growing energy source, accounting for 10% of electricity production.

A technological revolution is brewing in the photovoltaic sector, with a Polish start-up that is making a lot of headlines: this year, the company Saule Technologies has achieved the first commercial production based on the technology developed by physicist Dr. Olga Malinkiewicz. These are photovoltaic cells based on perovskite, a mineral whose physical properties seem to be much more interesting than the silicon used until now.

The range of possible applications is increased tenfold by printing these photovoltaic cells on a flexible, very thin film (and in various colors – the photo above is an example). For its first commercial use, the company installed blinds with perovskite cells for Alipast (Lublin, Poland), in partnership with the French company Somfy (which has a long-standing presence in Poland), which provided the automatic control system for the blinds. Saule Technologies said it wants to be listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange before the end of the year.
